The Whitetop Mountaineers is a young duo, Martha Spencer and Jackson Cunningham. They both live in Whitetop, on the highest mountains in Virginia. Their shows feature old time county duet singing, up-tempo old time fiddle, clawhammer banjo, bluegrass mandolin and guitar instrumentals as well as high energy Appalachian dancing.
Martha and Jackson both come from musical families that have influenced their music. Martha's uncle, Albert Hash, was a legendary fiddler and luthier who gained widespread attention for his craft. Her parents, Thornton and Emily Spencer, are also well-kno wn and respected musicians and teachers of traditional mountain music. Jackson's grandmother was a brilliant singer, musician and teacher. His parents and siblings are also musicians, singers, and songwriters of traditional music. Since forming the Whitetop Mountaineers in 2007, Martha and Jackson have carried their music across the USA, UK, Ireland and Australia; winning the hearts of audiences with their heartfelt music and energetic performances. Their music, singing, and dance has most often been described as 'the real deal', 'authentic', soulful, and entertaining.
Martha and Jackson also both play in the Whitetop Mountain Band, a long-time established and popular old time band from Southwest Virginia, which has toured nationally and internationally. The band has been featured in magazine articles, books, tv and radio programs including "Strings of Life", "Hot Bed of Musicians", "Guide to the Crooked Road", "In Good Keeping", PBS, and CMT.
